The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in collaboration with the United nations University are organizing and co-hosting a high-level three day event entitled "Preventing the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction to non-State Actors: the Implementation of Resolution 1540 (2004) in the Arab World". The event will take place starting from today, 22 April to 24 April 2013 at different locations, including the Saudi Mission and the Security Council Report.

The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi, opened the session with an introductory speech which mentioned that The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has already pledged USD 500,000 in support of projects that will effectively contribute to the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004) by States and it’s extremely committed to raising awareness of resolution 1540 (2004) and to facilitate dialogue on its implementation among Permanent Missions of The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and of the League of Arab States.

The three day high level will be structured around three outreach activities distributed in three days and approached different communities and audiences. The first day would gather Permanent Representations of the Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf, the League of Arab States, 1540 Committee members, 1540 Committee experts, relevant international/regional organizations and UN System entities. Statements from the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi, and UN Secretary General H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, as well as other distinguished speakers will be delivered.  While on the second day, researchers specialized in 1540-related matters will trigger discussion on relevant aspects of the implementation of the resolution, as well as topics of Peace, Security and Disarmament. The final day session would be open to a broader audience from NGOs and academia, including students.
